SUMMARY:Jeffrey Millman\, PhD: A New Era of Diabetes Treatment: The Use of  Human Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Islets
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeffrey Millman is  an Associate Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Washington University School of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from MIT and completed his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Melton at Harvard University. His current research is focused on synergizing both biomedical engineering and cell biology approaches to use stem cells for the study and treatment of diabetes. He is developing new approaches for the differentiation of insulin-producing islets from stem cells and improving their utility for cell replacement therapy and in vitro disease models. His innovations have been licensed to several biotechnology and startup companies in the diabetes space and resulted in one ongoing clinical trial. SUMMARY:Diabetes Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Please save the date for the University of Washington Diabetes Day\, Wednesday May 25th at UW South Lake Union. Registration is required (schedule with registration link/QR code is attached). This event will focus on and celebrate trainees undertaking research related to diabetes\, obesity\, nutrition or metabolism research. Trainee of the year lectures will be held in the morning\, with a poster session in the afternoon. \n  \nTo participate in this poster session\, please submit an abstract (instructions are in the attached template) by Friday May 13th. This will be an exciting venue for you to share your research and receive feedback from both faculty and other trainees. Junior (and senior!) faculty are also encouraged to participate in the poster session\, space permitting. Posters will be judged by a faculty panel\, with the winner receiving the Brunzell Fellows Award in recognition of their work. \n  \nAdditionally\, trainees are welcomed to join keynote speaker Jane Reusch for a meet-the-professor lunch. Dr. Reusch is internationally recognized for her mentorship\, being the 2022 recipient of both the American Diabetes Association’s Albert Renold Award and the Endocrine Society’s Outstanding Mentor Award. We are fortunate to have Dr. Reusch here during this busy time\, and we encourage you to take this opportunity to interact with her. \nFlyer \nAbstract Template
