Fast Facts

Our institute — the first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest — brings basic research, clinical care and translational research together under one roof, fast-tracking the breakthroughs that lead to better treatments. This multidisciplinary environment also enables us to train the next generation of physicians to provide world-class care to their future patients. The UWMDI draws upon the expertise of a wide range of investigators with complementary interests in diabetes, obesity, inflammation, lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. Members of the Institute’s faculty conduct both basic research to clarify the mechanisms causing diabetes and obesity and their consequences, and translational research to transform their research findings into clinical solutions.
