Kalie L. Tommerdahl, MD, MS, is a physician-scientist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine and attending physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her research program focuses on deepening our understanding of the mechanisms underlying cardiorenal complications in youth and adults with obesity, insulin resistance, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, with a particular emphasis on early microvascular dysfunction, kidney hemodynamics, and novel therapeutic interventions.
Her work integrates physiological assessments, advanced imaging, and clinical trials to identify and target early disease before irreversible damage occurs. She is the Principal Investigator of the NIH/NHLBI-funded MANATEE-T1D study and the American Diabetes Association-funded IMST study and serves as a Co-Investigator on several large multi-center studies (T1DISCO, Sugar’N’Salt, REMODEL-T1D, ATTEMPT, KPMP, WAVE-T1D, PANTHER). With over 45 peer-reviewed publications and active funding from the NIH, the American Diabetes Association, and industry partners, Dr. Tommerdahl is committed to translating research discoveries into clinical practice. She also serves as Director of Clinical Trial Safety for the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute and is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of diabetes researchers as the Associate Director of the Enrichment Program for the UW Diabetes Research Center.
