Dr. Vincenzo Cirulli, Associate Professor (Departments of Medicine, and Pharmacology), has received a new R01 award from the NIDDK. The award will support Dr. Cirulli’s research over the next 4 years, with cumulative funding of more than $2 million. The project focuses on a novel strategy that exploits innate mechanisms of cell-to-cell signaling and communication between pancreatic islet cells, and aims to promote b-cell replication and regeneration, an area of research that harbors significant translational value for cell replacement therapies in diabetes. This effort will be conducted in collaboration with co-Investigators Dr. Laura Crisa (Departments of Medicine, and Pharmacology) who will contribute her expertise in vascular biology and models of islet cell transplantation, and Dr. Cole Trapnell (Assistant Professor, Department of Genome Sciences) who will help uncover the transcriptomic profile of replicating versus non-replicating islet cells.
